According to sports psychology, flow occurs when you tune into your passion. You become so engaged that time stands still. That’s because you get lost in the flow of activity.
Want to see flow in action? Watch Laurie Hernandez during the floor exercise at this week’s olympic gymnastics trials. Fortunately, olympic hopefuls aren’t the only ones who achieve flow. The secret to achieving flow at work lies in doing what you enjoy most. Simply put, how you recharge your battery determines how you achieve “flow.”
Laurie started gymnastics at the age of three as a hobby. By the age of five, Laurie knew that she liked the feeling of flying so much that she wanted to be a gymnast. Laurie makes it look sooo easy to find your flow. But to be perfectly honest, most people could use a little help finding their flow.
That’s where I come in with one of my favorite assessment tools: the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. According to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, there are sixteen different personality types based on four preferences. A preference for either extraversion or introversion determines how you achieve “flow”. Here’s how it works.

Extraverts are naturally drawn to the outer world of people and things. They focus attention and energy on the world outside of themselves.
Because they need to experience the world to understand it, they tend to like a lot of activity. Their favorite activities involve lots of interaction with others, whether one-on-one or in groups.
They like to be at the center of the action and enjoy an easy open rapport with others. They enjoy meeting new people. Extraverts recharge their batteries by being with others. For all these reasons, a job that requires a lot of socializing is a good fit for an extravert. Their ideal work environment is stimulating with an open floor plan that allows plenty of opportunity for discussion. Extraverts achieve flow by interacting with others in a stimulating environment that fosters discussion.
Introverts Get Their Career Satisfaction and Energy By Spending Time Alone
Introverts prefer social interaction on a smaller scale. Socializing one-on-one or in small groups is best for them. They avoid being the center of attention. They also prefer to get to know new people slowly.
Introverts value their alone time. That’s because they tend to focus on the inner world of ideas and impressions. Introverts need to try to understand the world before they experience it; that’s why a lot of their activity is mental. Introverts need alone time to collect their thoughts and “recharge their batteries.”A job that requires quiet concentration is a good fit for an introvert. Click To Tweet
For all these reasons, a job that requires quiet concentration is a good fit for an introvert. Their ideal work environment is quiet and includes an office of their own that gives them space to reflect. Introverts achieve flow by taking the time they need to think and plan quietly.
The Gift in You

The gift of Introversion is depth. Introverts have fewer interests, but they pursue them in greater depth. In the world of work, people with the gift of depth are often specialists.Specialists prefer to develop an area of expertise. Click To Tweet
As introverts, specialists prefer to develop an area of expertise. How do introverts do it? Introverts pursue extensive education, specialized training or research. They are gifted at planning and problem solving in their area of expertise. This ability makes them highly qualified to do a specific job.
Confessions of an Extravert in Search of Career Satisfaction
When I was a writing professor, I used to spend 20 hours a week interacting with my students and peers. I would spend another 45 hours a week outside of class preparing lessons and grading papers. Before long, I became overwhelmed by how much time I had to spend alone grading papers.
I’m an extravert who thrives on helping people. But as a writing professor I was forced to spend most of my time helping people by isolating myself from them. Isolation is the kiss of death for extraverts like me. The truth is, I need plenty of interaction with people for a job to fit well with my personality.
How Meaningful Relationships and Plenty of Inspiration Get Me in the Flow
Now, as an ADHD Coach, I tutor student athletes in college composition. As an Academic Coach, I help student athletes with time management and study skills. I even have the privilege of working with student athlete gymnasts like Laurie who inspire me.
Just to be clear, I don’t work with Laurie. But I do work with women’s gymnastics, golf and soccer. I also work with men’s lacrosse, baseball, wrestling and football. So far I enjoy working with gymnasts and football players the most. Even so I find inspiration in working with all of my student athletes in different ways.
My job is to help student athletes transition successfully from high school to college during the summer bridge program. This allows me to establish rewarding personal relationships with them.
What’s more, I’m part of an elite team of professionals that provide academic support to Division I student athletes. For all these reasons, I enjoy one of the most inspiring work environments ever!
Best of all, I don’t bring work home with me anymore! This leaves me with more time and energy to help you find your flow.
